STEPS OF FAITH: EL CAMINO DE SANTIAGO

February 01 - February 10, 2027

The Camino de Santiago is a centuries-old Christian pilgrimage leading to the shrine of Saint James the Great in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Pilgrims from around the world walk its historic routes seeking faith, reflection, and cultural discovery.

OVERVIEW

The Camino de Santiago, the Way of Saint James, from Sarria is the most beloved and spiritually

cherished stretch of the pilgrimage. For generations, pilgrims have begun here, seeking not only to reach

their destination but to encounter the living heart of the Camino.

Along peaceful forests, quiet villages, and the lush Galician countryside, pilgrims experience fellowship, hospitality, and the gentle beauty of creation, signs of God’s providence along the way. Beginning about 100 kilometers from Santiago, this route fulfills the requirement to receive the traditional

Compostela, the Church’s certificate of completion.

2027 is an extraordinary time to walk the Camino de Santiago as it marks a Holy Year of Santiago (Jacobean Holy Year), when pilgrims reaching Santiago de Compostela may pass through the Holy Door of Santiago de Compostela Cathedral and receive special spiritual graces.

"Where the road becomes the revelation..."

Journey by foot in a spiritual tradition that blends faith, culture, and personal reflection.

DAY 01

Depart from Point of Origin to Madrid, Spain

As your long-awaited pilgrimage begins to unfold, make your way to your local airport, carrying with you

the prayers and intentions that have been quietly forming in your heart. There, you will board your

overnight flight(s) to Madrid, entrusting your journey to the Lord’s loving care.

Like the faithful pilgrims who have journeyed for centuries under the guidance of Saint James the Great,

you travel not merely toward a destination, but toward spiritual renewal. May the Lord watch over you in

your travels and bring you safely to the sacred threshold of Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, where

your pilgrimage will one day find its joyful fulfillment.

Madrid, Spain

The city is home to magnificent churches such as Almudena Cathedral and the historic San Isidro Basilica, where travelers can reflect, pray, and connect with centuries of devotion. As a cultural and spiritual crossroads of Madrid, it provides pilgrims with a deeper understanding of Spain’s faith, history, and enduring religious traditions.

DAY 02

In the heart of Spain, Madrid gently prepares the pilgrim’s soul for the sacred journey ahead. Before the

first step is taken on the Camino, many pause in prayer at the beautiful Almudena Cathedral, entrusting

their pilgrimage to God’s guidance.

From this vibrant city begins the quiet path of the Camino de Madrid, leading pilgrims away from the noise of daily life and into the grace of the journey. May your Camino begin in Madrid with faith, humility, and the peaceful hope of reaching Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, where the journey finds its sacred fulfillment.

DAY 03

After breakfast, you travel to Sarria, a sacred gateway where many pilgrims entrust their final steps

toward Santiago to God’s loving providence. Your walk begins in Foncebadón. Though its ancient

hospice and church now rest in quiet ruin, they still echo with centuries of whispered prayers.

From there, you ascend to the revered Cruz de Ferro. At the foot of this Iron Cross, you place a stone, a

simple yet profound symbol of burdens surrendered to Christ. Your journey continues to O Cebreiro, the mountain village of the Eucharistic Miracle, where the Lord strengthened a doubting heart through His Real Presence.

Upon returning to Sarria, walk prayerfully along Rúa Maior, visit the Church of Santa Mariña, stand

before the ancient fortress ruins, and enter the quiet peace of the Monastery of La Magdalena. The day

concludes in grateful rest, renewed in spirit and strengthened in faith.

is present. Pilgrimage is not only in beautiful landscapes, but in perseverance in choosing to walk when

the feet are sore and the heart is tested.

Passing humble villages and ancient churches like Church of Santa María de Castromayor, and standing before the silent Cross of Os Lameiros, you are reminded that faith endures through centuries.

Today may challenge you, but it may also transform you. For through steady steps and quiet surrender, you begin to see that the Camino is not only leading you to Santiago. It is gently leading you home to God and to your true self.

the Camino speaks most clearly to the heart.
